By Car from the UK
Take a ferry or the Euro Tunnel to France, Calais is the most popular port but Boulogne and Dunkirk are also accessible.
It takes about 12 hours to drive from Calais to Garzeno. This can been done in one day or split over two with an overnight stop enroute.
There are different roads to Lake Como. We recommend driving through France, Reims, Metz, Strasbourg and through the pretty wine route of the Alsace. This is where we normally incorporate an overnight stop.
Then the next day travel through Switzerland; Basel, through the Gotthard Tunnel to Lugano.
From Lugano drive along the Lake to Porlezza where you will see signs for Menaggio and Lake Como.
From here Casa Barella is only 30 minutes away.
Arriving in Como you can either take the bus (corriera), or from the lakeside in Como you can take the hydrofoil to Dongo. From Dongo there is a local bus to Garzeno, this is an infrequent service and can be unreliable at times.
Lake Como is serviced by three airports, all of them are about 1 or 2 hours drive from Garzeno.
They are Milan-Linate, Milan-Malpensa and Milan-Bergamo (Orio al Serio).
The following airlines fly here; Alitalia; BMI; British Airways; Aer Lingus; Easy Jet; Ryan Air; Jet2 and FlyBe
To make the most of your holiday we strongly recommend that you hire a car.
Driving in Italy is very easy, just remember to drive on the right and you’ll be fine!!
So long as you have a good map, navigating around will be easy. Road signs are plentiful and are good.
